THE STUDY OF PAVEMENT BLOWUPS
A STUDY HAS BEEN MADE OF RIGID PAVEMENT BLOWUPS IN ARKANSAS. AN INVENTORY OF 473 MILES OF RIGID PAVEMENT REVEALED THAT 934 BLOWUPS OCCURRED IN 1963. THE PAVEMENTS CONCERNED WERE DIVIDED INTO THREE GROUPS INCLUDING THOSE BUILT BEFORE 1944, THOSE BUILT FROM 1944-1958, AND THOSE BUILT FROM 1958-1963. INFORMATION CONCERNING THE TIMING AND CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE BLOWUPS WAS ANALYZED. BECAUSE THE POROSITY OF THE AGGREGATES AND THE MOISTURE IN THE SUBSOIL SEEMED TO BE TWO OF THE MORE IMPORTANT FACTORS, THE PAVEMENTS WERE REGROUPED INTO CLASSES DETERMINED BY THE COARSE AGGREGATES USED IN THEM. RECOMMENDATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR BOTH IMPROVED SPECIFICATIONS OF PAVEMENTS AND FURTHER RESEARCH. /AUTHOR/
