THIS IS AN ACCOUNT OF A FULL-SCALE ROAD EXPERIMENT BEING CONDUCTED JOINTLY BY THE MINISTRY OF WORKS, NEW ZEALAND /ON BEHALF OF THE NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL ROADS BOARD/ AND BY MEMBERS OF THE CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY. PART II OF THE PAPER DEALS WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TEST PAVEMENT AND WITH THE DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED WHEN TIGHT SPECIFICATIONS APPROPRIATE TO AN EXPERIMENTAL ROAD HAD TO BE MET. IN PARTICULAR THE STRENGTH OF THE LOESS SUBGRADE /AS MEASURED BY CBR TESTS/ WAS MORE VARIABLE THAN ANTICIPATED. ERRONEOUS FIELD PROCEDURES MAY HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE VARIATIONS, BUT OTHER UNEXPLAINED FACTORS MAY ALSO BE INVOLVED. /AUTHOR/
