PILE TEST LOADS COMPARED WITH BEARING CAPACITY CALCULATED BY FORMULAS

A COMPARISON IS MADE BETWEEN THE ACTUAL BEARING CAPACITY OF 59 INDIVIDUAL PILES, AS REVEALED BY LOAD TESTS, AND THE BEARING CAPACITY OF THE SAME PILES CALCULATED BY FOUR DIFFERENT DYNAMIC PILE FORMULAS. DATA FOR THE PILES STUDIED WERE OBTAINED FOR THE MOST PART FROM A NUMBER OF DISTRICTS OF THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS, U.S. ARMY, AND REPRESENT A WIDE VARIETY OF PILE TYPES, LENGTHS, SIZES, SOIL CONDITIONS, AND GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS. THE TYPE OF DRIVING EQUIPMENT AND THE DRIVING LOGS AS WELL AS THE LOAD TEST PROCEDURE AND RESULTS ARE AVAILABLE FOR EACH PILE. THE FOUR DYNAMIC FORMULAS USED IN THIS STUDY WERE THE ENGINEERING NEWS, THE EYTELWEIN, THE PACIFIC COAST, AND THE RABE FORMULAS. THEY WERE SELECTED MORE OR LESS ARBITRARILY AS BEING TYPICAL OF A WIDE VARIETY OF FORMULAS IN USE AT THE PRESENT TIME. /AUTHOR/
