MODEL STUDIES OF LATERALLY LOADED PILE FOUNDATIONS
THE PURPOSE OF THE MODEL STUDIES REPORTED IN THIS PAPER ARE: (A) TO FIND THE LATERAL AND VERTICAL LOAD DISTRIBUTION IN A LATERALLY LOADED PILE FOUNDATION; (B) TO COMPARE THE EXPERIMENTAL VALUES OF PILE LOADS WITH THOSE GIVEN BY SOME OF THE BETTER KNOWN THEORIES; AND (C) TO COMPARE THE EFFICIENCY OF PILE GROUPS WITH DIFFERENT ARRANGEMENTS OF PILES IN RESISTING LATERAL LOADING. THREE MODEL PILES, MADE OF WHITE OAK, WERE USED, EACH 1 1/2 IN. SQUARE IN CROSS-SECTION AND 45 IN. LONG. PILE LOADS WERE CALCULATED FROM PILE STRAINS OBTAINED BY THE USE OF SR-4 STRAIN GAUGES. DISPLACEMENTS OF MODEL FOUNDATIONS WERE MEASURED BY MECHANICAL DIALS. A TOTAL OF EIGHT TESTS WERE MADE ON MODEL FOUNDATIONS, EACH WITH A DIFFERENT PILE ARRANGEMENT. THE DISTRIBUTION OF LOADS, PARTICULARLY LATERAL LOADS, AMONG THE PILES WAS FOUND TO BE LARGELY DEPENDENT ON THE FOUNDATION MOVEMENTS. PILE LOADS AS PREDICTED BY ANALYTICAL METHODS SHOW REASONABLY GOOD AGREEMENT WITH EXPERIMENTS IF THE HORIZONTAL LOAD IS SMALL. PILE GROUPS WITH BATTERED PILES WERE GENERALLY MORE EFFECTIVE IN RESISTING LATERAL LOADS. /AUTHOR/
