ROAD PAVEMENT TEST TRACK
AFTER 2.4 MILLION WHEEL LOADS, ONE SECTION OF AN EXPERIMENTAL PAVEMENT TEST TRACK DEFORMED AND RAVELED. AN INSPECTION TRENCH 36 IN WIDE AND 54 IN DEEP WAS CUT ACROSS THIS FAILED AREA. THE BASE UNDER THE TOP LAYERS WAS BROKEN INTO CHUNKS 12 IN X 20 IN X 24 IN IN SIZE. THERE WAS NO MEASURABLE CHANGE IN GRADATION OF THE CRUSHED ROCK BASE MATERIAL OR THE PLASTICITY OF ITS FINES BUT THERE WAS AN APPRECIABLE INCREASE IN THE MOISTURE CONTENT AND DENSITY. THERE HAS BEEN NO EVIDENCE OF FAILURE IN THE OTHER SECTIONS AND OBSERVATIONS ARE CONTINUING ON TIRE WEAR AND STRIPE PAINT PERFORMANCE.
