CHRISTCHURCH-LYTTELTON TUNNEL ROAD PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE STUDY' THE EXPERIMENTAL ROAD AND ITS INSTRUMENTATION - PART I. PLANNING OF THE RESEARCH
THIS IS AN ACCOUNT OF A FULL-SCALE ROAD EXPERIMENT BEING CONDUCTED JOINTLY BY THE MINISTRY OF WORKS, NEW ZEALAND /ON BEHALF OF THE NEW ZEALAND NATIONAL ROADS BOARD/ AND BY MEMBERS OF THE CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY. THE EXPERIMENT COMPARES THE LOAD SPREADING PROPERTIES OF A NUMBER OF BASECOURSE MATERIALS AND ALSO PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR INVESTIGATING THE PROBLEMS OF INSTRUMENTATION OF TEST ROADS. PART I OF THIS PAPER DEALS WITH THE PLANNING OF THE TEST ROAD, THE REASONS FOR CHOOSING CERTAIN BASECOURSE MATERIALS FOR TESTING, AND THE ADVANTAGES OFFERED BY THIS SITE FOR FULL-SCALE PAVEMENT EXPERIMENTS. IT ALSO DISCUSSES THE FACTORS INVOLVED WHEN UNIVERSITY STAFF AND STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THE ROAD RESEARCH CARRIED OUT BY A GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT. /AUTHOR/
