A STUDY OF TRANSVERSE CRACKING OF BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS

PAVEMENT SPECIMENS FROM 33 DIFFERENT CONTRACTS, VARYING IN AGE FROM FIVE TO TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, WERE ANALYZED IN THE LABORATORY. THEY INCLUDED SPECIMENS OF THE BITUMINOUS LAYERS, GRANULAR BASE, SUBBASE AND SUBGRADE. CRACK INDICES WERE PREPARED OF THESE SAMPLED AREAS. THE DATA OBTAINED FROM 153 SPECIMENS WERE SUBJECTED TO REGRESSION ANALYSIS, AND A MATHEMATICAL MODEL WAS DEVELOPED TO DESCRIBE TRANSVERSE CRACKING IN TERMS OF PAVEMENT PROPERTIES. THE RESULTS FROM THIS ANALYSIS ARE PRESENTED AS ARE THE FINAL MODELS, WHICH IDENTIFY APPROXIMATELY NINE TO ELEVEN SIGNIFICANT VARIABLES. TABULATED AND GRAPHICAL PRESENTATIONS OF THE DATA ARE INCLUDED TOGETHER WITH PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE TYPES OF CRACKING EXPERIENCED. THOSE VARIABLES RELATED TO VISCOSITY OF THE ASPHALT AND THE CHANGE IN VISCOSITY WITH TEMPERATURE FOUND TO HAVE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON TRANSVERSE CRACKING. A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WAS FOUND TO EXIST BETWEEN THE NEWLY DEVELOPED TEST PROPERTY "CRITICAL TEMPERATURE" AND THE FREQUENCY OF OCCURRENCE OF TRANSVERSE CRACKING. A TEST SECTION OF ROAD IS BRIEFLY DESCRIBED WHERE TWO EXPERIMENTAL, HIGH-PENETRATION-INDEX ASPHALTS, BOTH WITH LOW CRITICAL TEMPERATURE VALUES, ARE BEING USED AND CONTRASTED TO REGULAR MATERIAL TO ASSESS THEIR RESISTANCE TO TRANSVERSE CRACKING. /RATAOC/
