VIBRATORY COMPACTION OF THICK LIFT ASPHALT AND CONCRETE BEARING COURSES
ON A MOTORWAY SITE NEAR KOBLENZ ARIER, GERMANY, A HEAVY DOUBLE VIBRATORY ROLLER FOLLOWING CLOSELY BEHIND THE PAVER WAS USED TO COMPACT A 15-CM THICK BEARING COURSE OF ASPHALT MIXTURE. STATIC ROLLING PASSES WERE AFTERWARDS USED TO IRON OUT THE SURFACE. STATIC PRE-COMPACTION WAS NOT USED SINCE THE ROLLER IS DRIVEN ON ALL FOUR DRUMS. THIS FEATURE ELIMINATES SHOVING OF THE MATERIAL OR PRODUCING A LOW WAVE AHEAD OF THE DRUM. TEST CASES TAKEN FROM THIS BEARING COURSE SHOWED HOMOGENEOUS BUILD UP OF THE MATERIAL THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE THICKNESS. SLIGHT DESTRUCTION OF THE AGGREGATE AT THE TOP AND BOTTOM WAS CONSIDERABLY LESS THAN WOULD HAVE OCCURRED IN A THREE LAYER CONSTRUCTION. /TRRL/
