STE ANNE TEST ROAD: CONSTRUCTION SUMMARY AND PERFORMANCE AFTER TWO YEARS' SERVICE
THE MATERIALS AND UNIFORMITY OF CONSTRUCTION OF THE STE. ANNE TEST ROAD ARE DESCRIBED, AND AN EVALUATION OF THE TRANSVERSE CRACKING OF THE TEST PAVEMENTS AFTER TWO WINTERS IS PRESENTED. THE OBSERVATIONS TO DATE SHOW THAT ASPHALT CONTENT AND AGGREGATE GRADATION ARE NOT SIGNIFICANT IN AFFECTING TRANSVERSE CRACKING OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS. THE TYPE OF SUBGRADE AND ROAD STRUCTURE DESIGN ASSUME IMPORTANCE ONLY IF ASPHALTS SUBJECT TO TRANSVERSE CRACKING ARE INVOLVED. VEHICLE TRAFFIC DID NOT SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECT TRANSVERSE CRACKING BUT DID CAUSE SOME LONGITUDINAL CRACKING AND SHORT RANDOM CRACKS. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT VARIABLES AFFECTING TRANSVERSE CRACKING OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS ARE THE ASPHALT TYPE AND GRADE. PAVEMENTS INCORPORATING HIGH VISCOSITY TYPE ASPHALTS AND SOFTER GRADE ASPHALTS INDICATED A GREATER RESISTANCE TO TRANSVERSE CRACKING. /CGRA/
