SKID NUMBERS FROM STEREO PHOTOGRAPHS
PAVEMENT SURFACES ARE DESCRIBED IN TERMS OF SEVEN TEXTURAL ELEMENTS (PARAMETERS) WHICH ARE INTERPRETED FROM STEREO-PHOTOGRAPHS. A TEXTURE CODE NUMBER CONSISTING OF ONE DIGIT FOR EACH TEXTURE PARAMETER DESCRIBES THE PAVEMENT SURFACE. CORRELATIONS BETWEEN THE EXTERNAL CODE NUMBERS AND THE ASTM SKID TRAILER RESULTS WERE OBTAINED FROM TESTS ON SEVERAL THOUSAND PAVEMENTS. A METHOD OF EVALUATING THE SKID RESISTANCE OF A PAVEMENT FROM STEREO-PHOTOGRAPHS IS PRESENTED. THE METHOD PROVIDES: AN INSIGHT INTO THE INFLUENCE OF SURFACE TEXTURE ON SKID RESISTANCE, AN EVALUATION OF SKID RESISTANCE FOR CURVES AND INTERSECTIONS WHERE THE SKID TRAILER METHOD CANNOT BE USED, AND AN INEXPENSIVE METHOD FOR SKID RESISTANCE EVALUATION. THE TECHNIQUES USED IN PROVIDING THE TEXTURAL RATING ARE DESCRIBED. /CGRA/
