A DISCUSSION IS PRESENTED ON THE MECHANISM AND CAUSE OF CONCRETE CRACKING DUE TO CONTRACTION, FOLLOWING THE DISSIPATION OF THE HEAT OF HYDRATION. THE RISK OF SERIOUS CRACKING CAN BE AVOIDED BY DESIGNING THE REINFORCEMENT ACCORDING TO THE LIMIT STATE THEORY AND BY CAREFUL CONTROL OF CONCRETE TEMPERATURE ON-SITE. /TRRL/
