STUDDED TIRES AND THEIR EFFECT ON FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
THE QUANTITY OF WEAR RESULTING FROM STUDDED TIRES ON BITUMINOUS SURFACING DEPENDS ON THE QUALITY OF THE ROCK IN THE MIXTURE. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE USE OF THESE TIRES TENDS TO PREVENT THE POLISHING OF THE SURFACING AND THUS INSURES THE VERY GOOD ANTI-SKID CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROADWAY. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE EXTRAPOLATION OF THE RESULTS OF DIFFERENT RESEARCHERS AND THEIR COMPARISON WITH THOSE OF QUEBEC INDICATE THAT A TOTAL OF 100,000 PASSING-OVERS OF STUDDED TIRES ARE REQUIRED TO PRODUCE 1/4 INCH OF WEAR. /AUTHOR/
