FINAL EVALUATION OF FIELD TESTS ON SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATED CEMENT CONCRETE

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES A STRUDY OF MOTORWAY REINFORCED PAVEMENT SLABS. STRAIN MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE ON THE REINFORCEMENT IN ORDER TO CORRELATE AN ACCEPTABLE DEGREE OF SHRINKAGE COMPENSATION WITH COMBINED EXPANSION AND SHRINKAGE. THOSE MEASUREMENTS CONFIRMED THE FACT THAT EXPANSION TAKES PLACE IN CONCRETE DURING THE FIRST DAY AFTER APPLICATION AND THAT ONCE THE INITIAL STAGE OF DRYING AND SHRINKAGE HAS BEEN REACHED, SHRINKAGE IS NOT COMPENSATED BY EXPANSION BUT REACHES SUCH A MAGNITUDE THAT TENSILE STRESSES CAUSE CRACKS IN SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATED AND ORDINARY PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE. IN PORTLAND CEMENT CONCRETE SLAB, THE FIRST CRACK APPEARS AFTER 130 DAYS, IN SHRINKAGE-COMPENSATED CEMENT CONCRETE SLAB, IT APPEARS AFTER 290 DAYS.
