INTERIM REPORT ON A FULL-SCALE ROAD EXPERIMENT
IN 1965, THIRTY-SIX SHORT EXPERIMENTAL SECTIONS OF PAVEMENT WERE CONSTRUCTED ON HIGHWAY 10, NORTH OF BRAMPTON, TO COMPARE FIVE TYPES OF BASE MATERIALS LAID IN FOUR THICKNESSES ON THREE THICKNESSES OF SUB-BASE. MEASUREMENTS OF BENKELMAN BEAM REBOUND, RUT DEPTH, AND LONGITUDINAL PROFILE ARE BEING MADE PERIODICALLY TOGETHER WITH OTHER OBSERVATIONS, AND THIS REPORT PRESENTS A SUMMARY OF THE RESULTS FOR 1965, AND 1966, AND 1967. ANALYSIS OF THE BENKELMAN BEAM RECOVERY VALUES HAS PROVIDED LAYER EQUIVALENCY FACTORS WHICH APPEAR TO BE COMPATIBLE WITH ELASTIC THEORY. THE BEHAVIOUR OF THE MATERIALS IN RUTTING IS ANALYZED AND SOME ANOMALOUS BEHAVIOUR DISCUSSED. THE CONDITIONS OF THE DIFFERENT TEST SECTIONS HAVE NOT YET REACHED A POINT WHERE AN ANALYSIS OF EQUIVALENCY BASED ON PERFORMANCE CAN BE MADE, AND IT WOULD APPEAR THAT THE LOW FREQUENCY OF HEAVY AXLE LOADS MAY PLACE PERFORMANCE TIMES OF MANY OF THE TEST SECTIONS OUTSIDE THE PRACTICAL LIMITS OF AN EXPERIMENT. /AUTHOR/
