THE NATURE OF THE BOND BETWEEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF AGGREGATES AND PORTLAND CEMENT
IN ORDER TO STUDY THE NATURE OF THE PORTLAND CEMENT- AGGREGATE BOND, THE CEMENT-AGGREGATE INTERFACES OF FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF AGGREGATE ARE EXAMINED USING THE SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE. THE AGGREGATES USED ARE SAND, BASALT, GRANITE, AND LIMESTONE. THEY SHOWED SIGNS OF CHEMICAL ETCHING BUT NOT OF CHEMICAL BONDING WITH THE CEMENT HYDRATION PRODUCTS. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT THE CEMENT- AGGREGATE BOND IS MAINLY DUE TO THE FREE SURFACE ENERGY OF THE CEMENT HYDRATION PRODUCTS AND THE VISCOSITY EFFECT OF THE SURROUNDING LIQUID PHASE PRESENT IN THE MORTAR. ATTENTION IS ALSO DRAWN TO THE SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE CEMENT-CEMENT BOND AND THE CEMENT-AGGREGATE BOND.
