EVALUATION OF A DYNAMIC DEFLECTION DETERMINATION
A LANE-WELLS DYNAMIC DEFLECTION DETERMINATION SYSTEM /DYNAFLECT/ WAS EVALUATED AS A REPLACEMENT FOR BENKELMAN BEAM STATIC LOADING DEFLECTION TESTING AND AS A RESEARCH TOOL FOR DETERMINING DYNAMIC DEFLECTIONS AND ASSOCIATED ENGINEERING PROPERTIES OF PAVEMENT STRUCTURE COMPONENTS. CORRELATION STUDIES WITH THE BENKELMAN BEAM INDICATED THAT A LINEAR FUNCTION WAS MOST SIGNIFICANT, AND A COMPUTER REGRESSION ANALYSIS PROVIDED A SIGNIFICANT EQUATION BUT THE COEFFICIENT OF CORRELATION WAS NOT HIGH. THE ABILITY OF THE DYNAFLECT TO BE USED FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES THAT WERE EITHER DIFFICULT TO ATTAIN OR UNATTAINABLE BY BENKELMAN BEAM PROCEDURES WAS ALSO ASSESSED. DEFLECTION PROFILES AND CONTOUR PLANS TAKEN ON VARIOUS PAVEMENT STRUCTURES WERE USED TO PROVIDE MAXIMUM DEFLECTION PROFILES, AND INFORMATION ON THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS SURFACING AND SUBGRADE MATERIALS ON DYNAMIC DEFLECTION PATTERNS. OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS OF THE DYNAFLECT WERE ASSESSED AND RESULTS SHOWED APPROXIMATELY 16% DOWNTIME OCCURRED BECAUSE OF ELECTRICAL OR MECHANICAL MALFUNCTIONS' UNDER SASKATCHEWAN SKELETON BENKELMAN BEAM TESTING CONDITIONS, THE DYNAFLECT REQUIRED APPROXIMATELY 4 1/2 TIMES THE TIME FOR A SINGLE DEFLECTION READING AS DID THE BEAM AND UNDER CONCENTRATED TESTING CONDITIONS, THE BEAM REQUIRED APPROXIMATELY TWICE AS MUCH TIME FOR A SINGLE READING AS DID THE DYNAFLECT. IMPROVEMENTS TO MAKE THE DYNAFLECT EASIER AND SIMPLER TO OPERATE ARE SUGGESTED AS A RESULT OF THE SASKATCHEWAN EVALUATION PROGRAM. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE DYNAFLECT' /1/ HAS VERY GOOD POTENTIAL AS A RESEARCH SYSTEM FOR DETERMINING STRENGTH AND PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF PAVEMENT STRUCTURE MATERIALS, BUT /2/ REQUIRES IMPROVEMENTS TO MINIMIZE DOWNTIME AND REDUCE TESTING TIME BEFORE IT CAN BE USED FOR ROUTINE DEFLECTION TESTING UNDER SASKATCHEWANS OPERATING CONDITIONS.
