MAXIMUM SPEED OF THE RAIL WHEEL SYSTEM. REPORT NO. 1. PRELIMINARY REPORT
The above report shows the result of the initial analysis, which should enable decisions to be taken concerning the possible continuation of the study relating to the maximum Professor Laithwaites' magnetically-suspended, linear-motor, rail-wheel system, using adhesion for the transmission of the propulsive force, is capable. This study, which is based on an appraisal of existing knowledge, shows the result of trials on the line, as well as a comparison between knowledge which is likely to set technical limits, so far as the track and vehicles are concerned. It is principally devoted to speeds in excess of 300 km/h. From the provisional conclusions which have been reached, it has been possible to assume that, in the event of a definite decision being given in favour of the continuation of this study, it would be necessary to carry out a theoretical study in two stages: 1) a detailed study of the speed limits shown in each different part of the problem, considered separately; 2) constitution of a kind of general outline enabling the probable speed of the Global system to be established.
