TRIAXIAL TESTING OF NONREINFORCED CONCRETE SPECIMENS

ON THE BASIS OF DATA AVAILABLE IN THE LITERATURE CITED IT IS CONCLUDED THAT SUFFICIENT EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES ARE AVAILABLE FOR TESTING THE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE UNDER TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION WITH AT LEAST TWO PRINCIPAL STRESSES BEING EQUAL, BUT THERE ARE VERY FEW AVAILABLE PROCEDURES THAT ALLOW INDEPENDENT VARIATION OF ALL PRINCIPAL STRESSES. THE PARAMETERS CONTROLLING THE STRENGTH INCREASE OF CONCRETE UNDER TRIAXIAL COMPRESSION AS AGAINST ITS UNIAXIAL COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH ARE NOT CLEARLY DEFINED. RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR FURTHER STUDY ON HOW THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE SPECIMEN UNDER TRIAXIAL STRESS CONDITIONS IS INFLUENCED BY THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF AGGREGATE AND BY THE AGE OF LOADING, MOISTURE CONTENT, AND THE THERMAL STATE OF THE CONCRETE.
