CONDITION SURVEYS ALONG INTERSTATE ROUTE I-70S

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE IS TO DETERMINE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE MATERIALS, METHODS, ETC. USED DURING THE REHABILITATION AND RESURFACING OF I-70S IN 1965. EVALUATION OF PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE HAS BEEN ACCOMPLISHED PRIMARILY BY ANNUAL FIELD CONDITION SURVEYS INCLUDING PRESENT SERVICEABILITY INDEX (PSI) DETERMINATIONS, ROAD ROUGHNESS, SKID RESISTANCE, AND BENKELMAN BEAM DEFLECTIONS. THE 1971 CONDITION SURVEY RESULTS WERE COMPARED WITH PREVIOUSLY OBTAINED RESULTS AND THE WHOLE INVESTIGATION WAS EVALUATED. THE RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE REHABILITATION AND RESURFACING REDUCED THE ROUGHNESS CONSIDERABLY; AND AS FAR AS RIDEABILITY IS CONCERNED, THE RESURFACED FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT SECTIONS WERE STILL PERFORMING IN A SATISFACTORY MANNER. RESULTS OF THE ANNUAL PSI SURVEYS IN 1971 INDICATED THAT THE I-70S REHABILITATION AND RESURFACING CONTRACTS ARE STILL STRUCTURALLY ADEQUATE. THERE WAS A CONSIDERABLE REDUCTION IN SPRING DEFLECTION VAUES AFTER THE RESURFACING IN 1965, AND SINCE THEN THERE HAS BEEN NO SIGNIFICANT CHANGE IN DEFLECTION VALUES. SKID RESISTANCE VALUES WERE ESPECIALLY LOW ON THE RESURFACING CONTRACT FROM MD. 118 TO I-495. IN ADDITION, THE SKID RESISTANCE AT THE INTERSECTION OF I-70S AND # I-270 WAS IMPROVED CONSIDERABLY BY THE ADDITION IN 1970 OF A 3/4-INCH MINIMUM BITUMINOUS CONCRETE SURFACE COURSE CONTAINING SLAG AGGREGATE. HOWEVER, RESULTS OF FOLLOW-UP TESTS IN 1971 INDICATED THAT THE SKID RESISTANCE AT THAT INTERSECTION HAD DECLINED SINCE RESURFACING. OVERALL, THE GENERAL PAVEMENT CONDITION OF THE RESURFACED SECTIONS IS STILL VERY GOOD. RUT DEPTHS IN WHEEL PATHS ARE SMALL, AND AREAS OF CRACKING AND PATCHING ARE NEGLIGIBLE. /FHWA/
