PLASTIC AGGREGATES USED FOR INSULATED CONCRETE FIELD TEST IN NEW JERSEY

THE APPLICATION OF A CONCRETE BASE COURSE FOR A SMALL IN-PLANT ACCESS ROAD AT AN INDUSTRIAL SITE, LOCATED IN JAMESBURG, N.J., IS NOW ENTERING ITS SECOND YEAR OF CLOSE SCRUTINY BY THE INDUSTRY. POLYSTYRENE PLASTIC BEADS WERE COATED WITH BOTH AN EPOXY AND CEMENT PASTE AND CURED. AS AGGREGATE THEY GIVE A HIGH STRENGTH-TO-WEIGHT RATIO TO THE HARDENED CONCRETE. FINAL RESULTS OF THE TEST HAVE NOT YET BEEN RELEASED, BUT ALL INDICATIONS ARE THAT THE PLASTIC- AGGREGATE MIX FORMED THE EXPECTED FROST BARRIER, SIMILAR TO MAJOR APPLICATIONS APPLIED IN NORTHERN EUROPE.
