FACTORIAL EXPERIMENTS IN CONCRETE RESEARCH
THE USE OF FACTORIAL EXPERIMENTS IS ILLUSTRATED BY THE DESCRIPTION OF AN EXPERIMENT IN WHICH THE FACTORS WERE CEMENT TEMPERATURE, INITIAL MIX TEMPERATURE, CEMENT COMPOSITION, AND WATER-CEMENT RATIO. IT IS SHOWN HOW AN ANOMALY IN THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSES OF VARIANCE WAS TRACED THROUGH THE CALCULATIONS TO ITS SOURCE IN THE TESTING LABORATORY. SIGNIFICANT INTERACTIONS WERE FOUND AND HENCE IT IS CONCLUDED THAT IT IS POSSIBLE FOR CONVENTIONAL SINGLE FACTOR EXPERIMENTS TO MASK TRUE EFFECTS ON THE RESPONSE OF CONCRETE. WHENEVER INTERACTIONS ARE SUSPECTED THE FACTORIAL EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE SHOULD BE USED. /AUTHOR/
