ABSORPTIVE FORM LINERS: NEGLECTED METHOD IMPROVES CONCRETE SERVICE DURABILITY

ABSORPTION FORM LINERS (AFL) ARE EFFECTIVE AND RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE MEDIA FOR BETTER AND MORE DURABLE CONCRETE SURFACES--UNFORTUNATELY, THIS PROMISING ADVANCE IN CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY WAS NEVER FULLY IMPLEMENTED. THE POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS OF AFL ARE UNLIMITED AND ITS PROPERTIES ADVANTAGEOUS. IT IS FOUND THAT CONCRETE SURFACES FORMED AGAINST AFL'S HAVE SUPERIOR QUALITIES STEMING FROM A DECREASE IN WATER-CEMENT RATIO. THIS RESULTS FROM A DIRECT REMOVAL OF FREE WATER AT THE FORM SURFACE. SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT PROPERTIES WERE THAT SURFACES OF ALL AGES FROM 1-50 DAYS FORMED AGAINST A AFL HAD MARKEDLY BETTER SURFACE HARDNESS THAN THOSE FORMED AGAINST WOOD AND THAT THESE SURFACES ARE LESS POUROUS THAN THOSE CAST AGAINST OILED WOOD FORMS. LABORATORY RESULTS SHOW PARTICULAR RESISTANCE TO ABRASION AND FREEZING AND THAWING. POSSIBLE APPLICATIONS ARE TO REDUCE THE PENETRATION OF WATER AND BRINE INTO CONCRETE, MITIGATING DAMAGE FROM FREEZING AND THAWING; USE ON DECKS, CURBS, AND PARAPETS OF BRIDGES EXPOSED TO DEICING AGENTS; TO EXTEND THE SKID RESISTANCE LIFE OF CONCRETE PAVEMENTS.
