THE INFLUENCE OF SULPHATES ON THE POZZOLANIC CHARACTERISTICS OF SILICOALUMINOUS FLY-ASH FROM A POWER STATION
A STUDY IS MADE OF THE BEHAVIOR OF A SILICOALUMINOUS FLY-ASH IN CONTACT WITH PURE WATER, LIME-SATURATED WATER AND PORTLAND CEMENT-SATURATED WATER. IN PURE WATER, THE ASH RELEASES ALKALINE AND CALCIUM VERY RAPIDLY IN THE FORM OF SULPHATES. THESE SULPHATES PLAY A VERY IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE EVOLUTION OF THE ASH IN CONTACT WITH LIME-SATURATED WATER. IN THEIR PRESENCE, ETTRINGITE THEN TOBERMORITE ARE FORMED; IF THEY ARE ABSENT, TOBERMORITE ONLY IS FORMED. IN CONTACT WITH CEMENT-SATURATED WATER WHICH CONTAINS SULPHATE AND LIME, ETTRINGITE IS FORMED. /TRRL/
