THE INFLUENCE OF THE FILLER TYPE AND CONCENTRATION ON THE PROPERTIES OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE MIXTURES
AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO MODIFY BITUMINOUS MIXTURES FOR PAVEMENTS IN ORDER TO INCREASE THE RESISTANCE TO RUTTING AND SLIPPERINESS. THE OPTIMUM BINDER CONTENT OF FILLER-BITUMEN MIXTURES WAS DETERMINED FOR A NUMBER OF FILLERS BY MEANS OF FOUR TEST METHODS, I.E. MAXIMUM TENSILE STRENGTH, BITUMEN NUMBER (VAN DER BAAN), A MODIFIED VAND DER BAAN TEST USING OIL INSTEAD OF WATER, AND DRY COMPACTION (RIGDEN). SEVERAL FILLERS, PARTICULARLY THOSE WITH A LIMESTONE BASE, SHOWED DEVIATIONS FROM HEUKELOM'S RULE FOR THE RATIO BETWEEN VAN DER BAAN- AND RIGDEN-RESULTS. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT, IN SOME CASES, THE VAN DER BAAN'S TEST DID NOT INDICATE THE OPTIMUM BINDER CONTENT. A CORRECTION WAS MADE, THEREFORE, IN THE PERCENTAGES OF BITUMEN AND FILLER USED AT THE PRELIMINARY MARSHALL-TESTING OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE MIXTURES. TEST PAVEMENTS PROVED SUFFICIENTLY STABLE AND RESISTANT TO SKIDDING. /TRRL/
