A METHOD FOR EVALUATING PAVEMENTS AND/OR THEIR SUBGRADES
DEFLECTION MEASUREMENT CAUSED BY A WHEEL LOAD IS ONE OF THE BEST AVAILABLE MEANS TO EVALUATE THE STRUCTURAL STRENGTH OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS. HOWEVER, IT HAS BEEN DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE WHETHER INCREASES OR DECREASES IN DEFLECTION ARE ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE OVERLYING THE SUBGRADE OR TO THE SUBGRADE ITSELF. A PROCEDURE, BASED LARGELY ON THEORY IS DEVELOPED FOR ESTIMATING THE SUBGRADE AND/OR PAVEMENT STRUCTURE STRENGTH FROM MEASUREMENTS OF THE MAXIMUM DEFLECTION PLUS FOUR ADDITIONAL DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS WITHIN THE DEFLECTED BASIN BY THE DYNAFLECT. /FHWA/
