THE STABILITY OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE AND THE GRADING REFINEMENT OF ITS MINERAL STRUCTURE
STUDIES ARE REPORTED OF MARSHALL STABILITY AND CHANGES (PARTICLE REFINEMENT) IN THE AGGREGATE STRUCTURE OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE AFTER STABILITY TESTING. IT IS SHOWN THAT A REFINEMENT OF THE PARTICLE OCCURS DURING THE COMPACTION OF THE SAMPLE, AND THAT THIS CHANGE IS COUNTERACTED BY THE LUBRICATING ACTION OF THE BINDER, WHICH IS STILL OF LOW VISCOSITY DURING COMPACTION, PROVIDED THAT THE BINDER CONTENT IS OPTIMUM OR SLIGHTLY IN EXCESS OF OPTIMUM. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT AN EXCESS OF BINDER MAY BE ALLOWED IF MODIFICATION OF THE PARTICLE STRUCTURE IS TO BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM. HOWEVER, THIS CONTRADICTS THE REQUIREMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH SKIDDING RESISTANCE. /TRRL/
