THERMAL EXPANSION OF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS-CONSEQUENCES RELATED TO MINIMUM VOIDS CONTENT
AFTER CONSIDERING THE THERMAL EXPANSION OF AGGREGATES, BINDERS AND BITUMINOUS MIXTURES, AND LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS OF CHANGES IN VOIDS CONTENT, THE AUTHOR DEMANDS THAT, IN THE CASE OF HIGHLY WEAR- RESISTANT BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS, THE BINDER CONTENT AND VOIDS RATIO BE CALCULATED IN SUCH A WAY THAT "OVER-FATTING" AND ITS CONSEQUENCES CANNOT TAKE PLACE, EVEN UNDER THE MOST UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS. IT IS THEREFORE RECOMMENDED THAT WITH FINE AND COARSE ASPHALTIC CONCRETE A MINIMUM VOIDS CONTENT OF 1.5 PERCENT OF VOLUME SOULD NOT BE EXCEEDED, AND WITH SAND ASPHALT A VOIDS CONTENT OF 2 PERCENT OF VOLUME. THESE VALUES ARE PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT WHEN LAYING TAKES PLACE IN HIGH SUMMER. THE BINDER CONTENT ALWAYS HAS TO BE DETERMINED BY SUITABILITY TESTING. /TRRL/
