THE ACTUAL AND APPARENT IMPROVEMENT IN THE ADHESION OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS BROUGHT ABOUT BY ADMIXTURES

TESTS CARRIED OUT AT THE UNIVERSITY OF DRESDEN SHOWED THAT CHEMICALS HAD A VARYING EFFECT ON THE ADHESION OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS TO ROADSTONES. A DISTINCTION WAS MADE BETWEEN ACTIVE AND PASSIVE ADHESION, OR BETWEEN UNIVERSAL AND PSEUDO ADHESION AGENTS WHICH RESULTED IN AN ACTUAL AND AN APPARENT IMPROVEMENT IN THE ADHESION. IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT UNIVERSAL ADHESION AGENTS, WHICH IMPROVE THE ADHESION OF BITUMINOUS BINDERS TO ACID AND ALKALINE ROCKS EQUALLY WELL, ARE RARE. IT WAS ALSO ESTABLISHED THAT MANY OF THE ADMIXTURES ARE NOT RESISTANT TO HEAT. IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE ADMIXTURES USED IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THEY ARE ONLY ADDED TO THE BITUMINOUS BINDERS ON SIDE. /TRRL/
