APPARENT VOLUME OF FILLER AS INDICATOR OF MARSHALL PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

THE PAPER DESCRIBES TWO SUCCESSIVE EXPERIMENTS ON THE EFFECTS OF FILLERS TO THE TEST PROPERTIES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. THE EXPERIMENTS WERE DESIGNED SO THAT STATISTICAL ANALYSIS COULD BE APPLIED TO EVALUATE THE LIKELY VALUE OF THE OBSERVED VARIATIONS. TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON FOUR FILLERS -- CEMENT, PULVERIZED FUEL ASH, LIME AND KAOLIN -- AT FIVE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF "FREE BITUMEN" AND AT FOUR DIFFERENT LEVELS OF "APPARENT FILLER VOLUME" IN THE MIXTURES. MARSHALL STABILITY AND FLOW AND IN SOME CASES HVEEM STABILITY AND COHESION WERE MEASURED. THE ANALYSES OF THE EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS SHOWED THAT AS INDICATORS OF MARSHALL VALUES, THE ORDER OF RELIABILITY WAS APPARENT VOLUME, FREE BITUMEN, TYPE OF FILLER. THE GENERAL CONCLUSION ALSO STATES THAT INDEPENDENT OF FILLER TYPE, OPTIMUM MARSHALL VALUES ARE REACHED AT ABOUT 10 PER CENT TO 12 PER CENT APPARENT VOLUME OF FILLER IN THE MIXTURE. /AUTHOR/
