A STUDY OF PAVEMENT SKID RESISTANCE AT HIGH SPEEDS AND AT LOCATIONS KNOWN TO BE FOCAL POINTS OF ACCIDENTS
THE CONSTRUCTION OF A TWO-WHEEL SKID TRAILER CAPABLE OF OPERATION AT SPEEDS OF 75 TO 80 MPH IS DESCRIBED. IT EXCEEDS THE REQUIREMENTS OF ASTM E-274. THE FORCE MEASURING CIRCUIT IS COMPOSED OF TWO FULL BRIDGE 120 OHM STRAIN GAGE TRANSDUCERS, ONE FOR EACH WHEEL FOR THE DESIGN OF THE TRAILER HITCH. CONSIDERABLE DIFFICULTY WAS ENCOUNTERED IN OBTAINING A SUITABLE TOWING VEHICLE. THE FACTORY MODEL WAS MODIFIED TO PROVIDE THE ESSENTIAL NEEDS. CONSTRUCTION COSTS ARE INCLUDED, AND ENGINEERING DRAWINGS OF THE TRAILER ARE SUBMITTED IN THE APPENDIX. /FHWA/
