THE FLORIDA SKID TRAILER
A SKID TRAILER IS CONSTRUCTED FOR USE IN ROUTINE SKID TESTING AND PAVEMENT SKID RESISTANCE RESEARCH. IT INCLUDES A PAVEMENT WETTING SYSTEM TO APPLY A CONSTANT DEPTH WATER LAYER AT ALL SPEEDS FROM 20 MPH TO 70 MPH, AND CAN TEST PAVEMENTS WITH EITHER OR BOTH WHEELS. ELECTRONIC TIMING CIRCUITRY CONTROLS ALL TEST CYCLES, AND PRESELECTED TIME SEQUENCES ARE AVAILABLE. A THREE-CHANNEL ELECTRONIC RECORDER PROVIDES A SEPARATE TRACE FOR EACH WHEEL FORCE MEASUREMENT AND RECORDS AN ANALOG SIGNAL PROPORTIONAL TO VEHICLE SPEED. ZERO SUPPRESSION CIRCUITRY IS USED ON ALL THREE CHANNELS TO IMPROVE RESOLUTION. MODIFICATIONS WERE REQUIRED IN THE TRAILER BRAKING SYSTEM (WHICH WAS CONVERTED FROM ELECTRONIC BRAKES TO AN AIR ACTUATED HYDRAULIC BRAKE SYSTEM) AND IN THE DESIGN OF THE STOP BAR TRANSDUCERS. THE PERFORMANCE OF THE FLORIDA SKID TRAILER INDICATES THAT FOUR TO SIX TEST REPLICATIONS WILL DETERMINE THE MEAN SKID NUMBER (SN) OF A UNIFORM PAVEMENT SURFACE WITHIN PLUS OR MINUS 2 SN AT THE 95% CONFIDENCE LEVEL. SKID TESTS ON TYPICAL ROADWAY SURFACES SHOW THAT THE TRAILER IS SUITABLE FOR DETERMINING SKID RESISTANCE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ROADWAY SURFACES WITH ACCEPTABLE ACCURACY AND PRECISION. A COIL SPRING SUSPENSION SYSTEM FOR IMPROVED TRACE INTERPRETATION AND LOADING CHARACTERISTICS IS INCLUDED IN THE SPECIFIC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE SKID TRAILERS. /AUTHOR/
