ASPHALT REPLACES UNBOUND ROADBASES: FULL-DEPTH EXPERIMENTS IN THE USA - FIRST EXPERIENCE IN THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

SINCE UNBOUND ROADBASES ARE PARTIULARLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO DAMAGE BECAUSE OF INCREASES IN AXLE LOADS, EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT IN THE USA IN WHICH THE FROST-PROTECTION GRAVEL LAYERS WERE REPLACED BY THINNER BITUMEN-BOUND LAYERS. IT WAS SHOWN THAT 15 CM THICK BITUMEN-BOUND LAYERS STOOD UP TO STRESSES JUST AS WELL AS 46 CM THICK UNBOUND LAYERS. THE TESTS ALSO SHOWED THAT THICK LAYERS (46 CM) CAN BE COMPACTED SUFFICIENTLY AS LONG AS THE CORRECT LAYING TEMPERATURE IS SELECTED. SIMILAR EXPERIMENTAL ROADS HAVE BEEN BUILT IN THE FEDERAL GERMAN REPUBLIC IN ORDER TO OBTAIN EXPERIENCE WITH THIS TYPE OF STRUCTURE. /TRRL/
