USE OF VISCOSITY GRADED SPECIFICATIONS FOR ASPHALT CEMENTS
THE SPECIFICATION AASHO M 226 FOR VISCOSITY GRADED ASPHALT CEMENT IS DISCUSSED. THE WORK IS REVIEWED OF A TASK FORCE APPOINTED TO STUDY THE SITUATION IN WHICH DIFFERENT STATES AND SUPPLIERS WORKED INDEPENDENTLY TO ESTABLISH SUITABLE SPECIFICATIONS AND TIME TABLES FOR CONVERSION FROM PENETRATION TO VISCOSITY GRADING. THE RESPONSES TO QUESTIONNAIRES SENT OUT BY THE TASK FORCE ARE DISCUSSED. A REVISION OF THE SPECIFICATIONS WHICH WOULD PROVIDE THE PURCHASER WITH THE OPTION OF SELECTING ONE OF THREE ALTERNATIVE SET OF LIMITS WAS PROPOSED. TABUATIONS OF THESE ALTERNATIVE LIMITS ARE PRESENTED. THE BACKGROUND AND SOME OF THE CONTROVERSIAL VIEWPOINTS CONCERNING VISCOSITY-GRADING OF ASPHALTS ARE REVIEWED. ALTHOUGH THE RESEARCH DONE ON THIS SUBJECT IS NOT PRESENTED, REFERENCES ARE CITED WHICH COVER A MAJOR PORTION OF THE WORK PERFORMED ON THE SUBJECT.
