DEVELOPMENT OF DURABLE ROAD TAR BINDERS FROM HIGH TEMPERATURE COKE OVEN TAR

OVER A PERIOD OF YEARS STARTING IN THE 1920'S THE USE OF TAR AS A ROAD BINDER IN AUSTRALIA DECLINED UNTIL THE 1960'S WHEN THERE WAS VERY LITTLE USED, EXCEPT FOR PRIMERS, PRECOATS AND SOME PRIMER SEAL WORK. TO REVERSE THIS SITUATION AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF AN INDIGENOUS RAW MATERIAL, A RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM WAS INSTIGATED TO IMPROVE THE DURABILITY OF HIGH TEMPERATURE COKE OVEN TAR ROAD TAR. FULL-SCALE ROAD EXPERIMENTS, IN CO-OPERATION WITH THE VARIOUS FEDERAL, STATE AND CITY AGENCIES, WERE CONDUCTED TO DEMONSTRATE THE DURABILITY OF LOW VOLATILE ROAD TAR CEMENTS IN PAVING MIXES. IT WAS OBSERVED THAT TAR HOT-MIX SURFACE COURSES SHOWED THE SAME RESISTANCE TO DEFORMATION OF TRAFFIC AT HIGH AND LOW PAVEMENT TEMPERATURES AS THE CONTROL SECTIONS OF BITUMEN MIX. THE SUPERIOR DURABILITY OF TAR MIXES TO BITUMEN MIXES IN AREAS SUBJECTED TO FUEL SPILLAGES WAS DEMONSTRATED. NEW SPECIFICATIONS FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE COKE OVEN ROAD TAR WERE DEVELOPED TO ASSURE UNIFORMITY IN QUALITY AND PROPERTIES. /AUTHOR/
