ASPHALT "FINGERPRINTING" NEW INDUSTRY AID
IN A JOINT PROJECT CONDUCTED BY FHWA AND MATERIALS RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT, INC., A SYSTEM HAS BEEN WORKED OUT THAT MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO DETERMINE FROM A LIMITED NUMBER OF LABORATORY TESTS WHETHER TWO ASPHALTS ARE THE SAME OR CAN BE EXPECTED TO GIVE THE SAME RESULS IN PRACTICE. THE PROJECT HAD THREE TARGETS: SET UP A DATA BANK OF INFORMATION RECORDED IN THE LITERATURE ON KNOWN AND WELL-DEFINED ASPHALTS, USE THESE ACCUMULATED DATA TO CORRELATE ASPHALT BEHAVIOR WITH CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTIES, AND SELECT THREE SETS OF PARAMETERS THAT DEFINE ASPHALT SPECIMENS AS IDENTICAL, SUFFICIENTLY ALIKE AS ONCE TO HAVE BEEN IDENTICAL, OR MATCHING IN BEHAVIOR. THE MANNER IN WHICH THESE GOALS WERE MET IS DESCRIBED.
