VOIDS IN COMPACTED SURFACE TREATMENT AGGREGATE LAYERS

IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE AIR VOID SPACE EXISTING WITHIN A SURFACE TREATMENT AGGREGATE LAYER AFTER EMBEDMENT OF THE AGGREGATE INTO THE UNDERLYING SURFACE, THE INFLUENCE OF AGGREGATE SIZE, AGGREGATE TYPE, TEMPERATURE, HARDNESS OF UNDERLYING SURFACE, AND COMPACTIVE EFFORT WAS INVESTIGATED. TECHNIQUES WERE DEVELOPED IN THE LABORATORY FOR DETERMINATION OF THE HARDNESS OF AN UNDERLYING SURFACE AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE AND FOR THE VOLUME OF VOIDS EXISTING IN A LAYER OF AGGREGATE AFTER EMBEDMENT INTO AN UNDERLYING SURFACE. THE TECHNIQUES ARE APPLICABLE TO A PREVIOUSLY DEVELOPED SURFACE TREATMENT DESIGN PROCEDURE.
