DESIGN, CONTROL, AND INTERPRETATION OF TESTS FOR BITUMINOUS HOT MIX BLACK BASE MIXTURES
A LABORATORY TEST PROCEDURE WITH GOOD REPRODUCIBILITY AND A PRACTICABLE FIELD STRENGTH TEST WERE DEVELOPED. A GYRATORY PRESS WAS USED TO MOLD SPECIMENS FOR TESTING WITH A PRESSURE PYCNOMETER. CURVES FOR ASPHALT CONTENT VERSUS DENSITY AND VOIDS WERE DETERMINED AND AN ENGINEERING CONCEPT INVOLVING THE USE OF VARIOUS TYPS OF UNCONFINED COMPRESSION TESTS IS PROPOSED FOR DIFFERENT QUALITY MIX CATEGORIES. SPECIFICATIONS BASED ON THESE ASPHALT-VOIDS RATIO CURVES ALLOW ACCEPTABLE MIXTURES TO BE CHOSEN FROM A WIDE VARIETY OF MINERAL AGGREGATES.
