HAULING COSTS AND QUALITY BENEFIT FROM HOTMIX STORAGE
A NEWLY INSTALLED SURGE BIN HAS HELPED A BIG-CITY HOTMIX PRODUCER SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF SCHEDULING TRUCKS AND PLANT PRODUCTION AROUND THE UNPREDICTABILITY OF CONGESTED TRAFFIC, DELAYS, TIE-UPS, AND THE WHIMS OF MIX CUSTOMERS. THE NUMBER OF RENTED TRUCKS HAS BEEN CUT IN HALF, CYCLE TIME IN THE HOTMIX PLANT HAS BEEN REDUCED, AND CUSTOMERS CAN NOW LOAD TRUCKS WITH THE EXCACT TONNAGE NEEDED. THE COMPLETE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED BY STANDARD HAVENS SYSTEMS. IT INCLUDES A 100 TON CONE-HEATED SURG-STOR BIN WITH A GLASGOW BATCHER AND A 54-FT ROLL-OUT TYPE, DRAG SLAT CONTINUOUS CONVEYOR. THE BATCHER COLLECTS MIX AT COVEYOR HEAD AND DROPS IT INTO THE BIN IN MULTI-TON BATCHES. THIS REDUCES SCATTERING OF MIX IN THE DROP AND HELPS PREVENT SEGREGATION.
