DEVELOPMENTS IN FLEXIBLE ROAD CONSTRUCTION
IN RECENT TIMES BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO INCREASED ATTACKS FROM AXLE LOADS, SPEED, STUDDED TIRES AND DE-ICING SALTS. BLOWN BITUMEN SHOULD INCREASE THE PLASTICITY RANGE AT LOWER TEMPERATURES. ADDITIONS OF RUBBER, LATEX, AND COPOLYMERISATES IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE BITUMEN, AS DO ADMIXTURES OF PVC AND CHANGES IN THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION. GUSSASPHALT IS BECOMING AN ECONOMIC PROPOSITION BECAUSE OF HIGH-CAPACITY MIXING PLANT. AS REGARDS IMPROVED SUBGRADES THE TREND IS TOWARDS REDUCED THICKNESSES. IMPROVED ROLLING, DUSTFREE MIXING AND THE HEAT INSULATING COURSES ARE AMONG THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS. FURTHER RESEARCH IS BEING CARRIED OUT. /TRRL/
