PREDICTING PERFORMANCE OF PAVEMENTS BY DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS
THE TWO MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY ARE TO DEVELOP A MEANS FOR PREDICTING THE LIFE OF FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS BY USE OF DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS OF SELECTED INSERVICE PAVEMENTS, AND TO DETERMINE WHICH OF THE THREE FACTORS OF TRAFFIC, SOIL SUPPORT, OR AGE HAVE THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON THE DEFLECTIONS. THE METHOD OF INVESTIGATION IS CENTERED AROUND THE CELL TYPE DESIGN WHICH IS DIVIDED INTO TWO TEST PATTERNS, WHICH USE THE TERMINAL SERVICEABILITY INDEXES, OF 2.0 AND 2.5 USED IN UTAH'S PAVEMENT DESIGN. THE THREE FACTORS OF TRAFFIC, SOIL SUPPORT, AND AGE WERE EACH EVALUATED AT THREE LEVELS IN THE CELL DESIGN. THE DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS ARE TAKEN IN THE OUTER WHEEL PATH IN BOTH THE FALL AND SPRING BY USE OF THE DYNAFLECT WHICH WAS DEVELOPED BY LANE-WELLS OF HOUSTON, TEXAS. THE HYPOTHESIS WAS FORMED THAT SPRING AND FALL DEFLECTIONS WERE THE SAME. THIS HYPOTHESIS WAS REJECTED IN BOTH TEST PATTERNS, WITH AN INCREASE OF 18.5% IN SPRING DEFLECTIONS. THE ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE SHOWED THAT TRAFFIC WAS THE ONLY ONE OF THE THREE FACTORS SIGNIFICANT AT THE 0.05 LEVEL IN AFFECTING DEFLECTIONS. /AUTHOR/
