BEHAVIOR OF BITUMINOUS MIXES UNDER REPEATED BLENDING /IN FRENCH AND DUTCH/

RESULTS ARE PRESENTED OF TESTS ON MODULI AND FATIGUE STRENGTH OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES IN SINUSOIDAL BENDING (CONTROLLED STRESS TESTS) WITH A VIEW TO USING THEM IN PAVEMENT DESIGN. THE 27 MIXTURES TESTED DIFFER BY THEIR COMPOSITION AND THE TYPE OF BITUMEN USED. THE DATA INDICATE THAT THE APPARENT ACTIVATION ENERGY RELATION MAY BE USED TO EVALUATE THE FREQUENCY- AND TEMPERATURE-DEPENDENT RESPONSES OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. ATTENTION IS DRAWN TO THE FACT THAT THE APPARENT ACTIVATION ENERGY IS APPROXIMATELY THE SAME FOR ALL MIXTURES INVESTIGATED (ABOUT 46 KCAL/MOLE). IT WAS ALSO ESTABLISHED THAT, WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE MIXTURES INVESTIGATED, THERE EXISTS A GENERAL RELATION BETWEEN: (A) THE RATIO OF THE MODULUS OF THE MIXTURE TO THE PERCENTAGE VOLUME OF AGGREGATE IN THE MIXTURE, VOIDS INCLUDED, AND (B) THE PRODUCT OF THE CORRESPONDING MODULUS OF THE BITUMEN AND A FACTOR WHICH DEPENDS ON THE PENETRATION OF THE BITUMEN. THE INTEREST OF SUCH A RELATION IS TO FACILITATE, FOR PRACTICAL PURPOSES, THE EXAMINATION OF THE VALUES OF THE MODULUS OF A MIXTURE KNOWING ITS COMPOSITION, THE CORRESPONDING MODULUS OF THE BITUMEN, AND ITS PENETRATION. FOR THE FATIGUE STRENGTH IN BENDING, IT IS ESTABLISHED THAT THE CRITICAL STRAIN E(N) FOR A GIVEN NUMBER N OF CYCLES DEPENDS PRINCIPALLY ON THE PERCENTAGE VOLUME OF BITUMEN IN THE MIXTURE (VOIDS INCLUDED), AND ALSO ON THE ASPHALTENE CONTENT OF THE BITUMEN. AS FOUND PREVIOUSLY, E(N) IS PRACTICALLY INDEPENDENT OF TEMPERATURE AND FREQUENCY. ON THE BASIS OF THESE RESULTS, AND WITHIN THE LIMITS OF THE MIXES INVESTIGATED, A GENERAL FORMULATION OF THE FATIGUE LAW OF BITUMINOUS MIXTURES IS GIVEN AND THE STATISTICAL ASPECT OF THE PHENOMENON IS TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION FOR THE APPLICATION OF THIS LAW. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT, IN PRACTICE, THE CHOICE OF A COMPOSITION MUST BE MADE TAKING ACCOUNT OF THE GENERAL ROAD DESIGN AND NOT ONLY A SINGLE PROPERTY. /TRRL/
