PAVEMENT SLIPPERINESS STUDIES INTERIM REPORT

THE STEADILY INCREASING VOLUME OF TRAFFIC AND THE VELOCITY OF THIS TRAFFIC HAS PLACED GREATER DEMANDS ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF PAVEMENTS WHICH HAVE ADEQUATE SKID RESISTANCE. ACCURATE AND RELIABLE MEASUREMENTS OF PAVEMENT FRICTION AND PROPER INTERPRETATION OF THE TEST RESULTS ARE INTEGRAL PARTS OF THE EVALUATION OF PAVEMENT MIXES AND DESLICKING TREATMENTS AND OF METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION. THIS INTERIM REPORT DOCUMENTS THE WORK CONDUCTED BY THE KENTUCKY DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS IN THE AREA OF SKID RESISTANCE OF PAVEMENTS THROUGH FISCAL YEAR 1969. THE KENTUCKY INTERIM STANDARD METHOD OF SKID TEST USING AN AUTOMOBILE IS DESCRIBED. INCLUDED ARE THE INSTRUMENTATION, TEST PROCEDURES AND THE DETERMINATION OF SKID RESISTANCE. THE KENTUCKY METHOD USING AN AUTOMOBILE WAS CORRELATED WITH SKID TRAILERS AT THE 1967 SKID CORRELATION AT OCALA, FLORIDA. THE RESULT OF THIS CORRELATION IS PRESENTED IN THE REPORT. AN EFFORT WAS MADE TO DETERMINE THE STATISTICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MEASUREMENTS AS A RESULT OF THE PROCEDURES EMPLOYED, EFFECTS DUE TO REPLACEMENT AND WEAR OF TEST TIRES, AND ENVIRONMENTAL INFLUENCES SUCH AS SEASON TEMPERATURES. IN ADDITION OVER 40 PAVEMENTS OF DIFFERENT TYPES AND AGE HAVE BEEN MONITORED SINCE 1964. POLISHING EFFECTS DUE TO TRAFFIC, TIME IN SERVICE, AND YEAR TO YEAR ENVIRONMENTAL DIFFERENCES WERE CONSIDERED IN ORDER TO ASCERTAIN THE FRICTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF VARIOUS PAVEMENTS. A CORRELATION BETWEEN THE DRAG TESTER AND THE AUTOMOBILE METHOD WAS MADE AND THE DATA AND RESULTS ARE PRESENTED. /AUTHOR/
