EARTHQUAKE EFFECTS ON THE SURFACE OF THE GROUND ARE EXTREMELY VARIED AND COMPLEX IN NATURE. THEIR EFFECTS ON ENGINEERING STRUCTURES ARE OF THE SAME ORDER OF COMPLEXITY. STRUCTURES SUBJECT TO EARTHQUAKE EFFECTS WHICH LEND THEMSELVES TO STUDY BY MODEL ARE EXAMINED WITH RESPECT TO SAFETY AND RELIABILITY. APPLICATION OF MODEL STUDY TO ACTUAL STRUCTURES, FOUNDATIONS, GROUND ACCELERATION WITHOUT PERMANENT RELATIVE GROUND DISTRIBUTION AND FAILURE CRITERIA ARE DISCUSSED. A CRUCIAL QUESTION IS THAT OF THE SENSITIVITY OF THE PREDICTED STRUCTURAL RESPONSE TO THE VARIOUS AVAILABLE MODELS. CONSEQUENCES OF THE DISTRIBUTION OF DAMPING IN THE STRUCTURE AND IN THE FOUNDATION ARE PRESENTED. /AUTHOR/
