A FOLDED PLATE APPROACH TO THE ANALYSIS OF BOX GIRDERS

THE PAPER PRESENTS A METHOD OF ANALYSIS FOR BOX GIRDERS BASED ON THE ORDINARY METHOD OF ANALYSIS OF FOLDED PLATE STRUCTURES. THE METHOD IS TERMED THE "NODAL SECTION METHOD" AND, SINCE IT ASSUMES A SIMPLIFIED STRUCTURAL BEHAVIOR, IT DOES NOT MAKE EXCESSIVE DEMANDS ON COMPUTER TIME AND STORAGE SPACE. FURTHERMORE, THE METHOD MAY BE APPLIED TO THE ANALYSIS OF A GIRDER IN WHICH THE CROSS-SECTION VARIES ALONG THE SPAN. RESULTS GIVEN BY THE METHOD ARE COMPARED TO VALUES OBTAINED FROM EXPERIMENTS AND ALSO TO VALUES GIVEN BY THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD, AND SATISFACTORY AGREEMENT IS NOTED IN ALL CASES. /AUTHOR/
