PUNCHING OF BRIDGE SLABS
THE RESULTS OF LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE INFLUENCE ON THE PUNCHING LOAD OF: (1) DEVIATION OF THE MOMENT DISTRIBUTION FROM POLAR SYMMETRY, (2) VARIATION OF THE AMOUNT OF FLEXURAL REINFORCEMENT IN THE DIRECTION OF THE LEAST BENDING MOMENT, AND (3) SHEAR REINFORCEMENT CONSISTING OF VERTICAL STIRRUPS, ARE PRESENTED. THE REINFORCEMENT WAS DESIGNED SO THAT PUNCHING WOULD OCCUR BEFORE YIELDING OF THE FLEXURAL REINFORCEMENT. THE TESTS SHOWED THE FAVORABLE EFFECT OF SHEAR REINFORCEMENT, THE LACK OF ANY INCREASE IN THE ULTIMATE LOAD BY THE ADDITIONAL FLEXURAL REINFORCEMENT IN THE DIRECTION OF LEAST MOMENT, AND THE DECREASE IN THE ULTIMATE LOAD FOR SLABS WITH NON-UNIFORM LOAD DISTRIBUTION.
