CORRELATION OF EXPANSIVE SOIL PROPERTIES AND SOIL MOISTURE WITH PAVEMENT DISTRESS IN ROADWAYS IN WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA
FROM JUNE 1968 TO AUGUST 1968, AN INVESTIGATION WAS MADE OF THE "BUMPS" IN THE PAVEMENT ON INTERSTATE 90 IN WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA TO DETERMINE THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE PAVEMENT DISTRESS TO THE CHARACTERISTICS OF PIERRE SHALE. ALTHOUGH BUMPS OCCUR AT CUT-TO-FILL TRANSITION SECTIONS THE MOST SEVERE BUMPS ALONG THE HIGHWAY ARE ASSOCIATED WITH OLD FAULT PLANES. THE "FAULT GOUGE" IN THE FAULT IS ESSENTIALLY THE SAME MATERIAL AS THE SURROUNDING SHALE, BUT IT IS GROUND UP AND APPARENTLY MORE SUSCEPTIBLE TO SWELL UPON WETTING THAN THE INTACT SHALE. THE BUMPS ARE CAUSED BY DIFFERENTIAL UPLIFT--THE GOUGE EXPANDS MORE AND FASTER THAN THE SURROUNDING SHALE. /AUTHOR/
