BEHAVIOR OF SLABS NEAR COLUMN, PIER AND ABUTMENT SUPPORTS
THE PAPER DESCRIBES THE RESULTS OF ANALYTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF THE BEHAVIOR OF CONCRETE SLABS NEAR VARIOUS TYPES OF SUPPORTS COMMONLY USED IN MODERN BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION. THREE TYPES OF SUPPORTS ARE CONSIDERED: (1) COLUMN SUPPORTS - THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION IN SLABS NEAR ISOLATED COLUMN SUPPORTS, ASSUMING ELASTIC BEHAVIOR, IS STUDIED FOR A NUMBER OF COLUMN/SLAB INTERACTION PROBLEMS. (2) PIER SUPPORTS - TESTS ON A ONE-THIRD SCALE REINFORCED CONCRETE MODEL OF A TYPICAL SLAB/PIER CONNECTION LOADED TO FAILURE ARE DESCRIBED. (3) ABUTMENT SUPPORTS - THE DISTRIBUTION OF BEARING REACTIONS AT THE ABUTMENT SUPPORTS OF A SIMPLY SUPPORTED 45 DEGREE SKEW SLAB WITH UPSTAND EDGE BEAMS IS INVESTIGATED, AND A SIMPLE METHOD OF CHECKING THE EFFECTS OF ELASTIC REACTIONS IS SUGGESTED. THE BASIS OF THE ANALYTICAL STUDIES IS THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD, PLATE OR SHELL ELEMENTS BEING USED FOR OVERALL ANALYSIS AND ISOPARAMETRIC ELEMENTS FOR LOCAL ANALYSIS. /AUTHOR/
