A STUDY OF PAVEMENT STRAINS AND DEFLECTIONS PRODUCED BY DYNAMIC TIRE FORCES
THE RESEARCH INCLUDED: (1) AN ANALYTICAL STUDY USING A SIMULATED SINGLE-WHEEL VEHICLE MODEL AND A SIMULATED PAVEMENT FOR PREDICTING THE TIRE FORCES THAT MIGHT RESULT ON A HIGHWAY UNDER DIFFERENT OPERATING CONDITIONS, AND (2) THE EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENT OF STRAIN IN A PHYSICAL PROTOTYPE OF SIMULATED PAVEMENT UNDER ACTUAL DYNAMIC VEHICLE LOADS. THE ANALYTICAL INVESTIGATION SHOWED THAT: (1) THE DYNAMIC TIRE FORCE INCREASES AS THE VEHICLE VELOCITY INCREASES, (2) THE DYNAMIC TIRE FORCE INCREASES SLIGHTLY AS THE TIRE PRESSURE IS INCREASED, AND (3) THE DYNAMIC TIRE FORCE INCREASES AS THE HIGHWAY PROFILE ROUGHNESS INCREASES. THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTAL MEASUREMENTS ON THE PAVEMENT SIMULATION PROTOTYPE UNDER THE PASSAGE OF A PASSENGER CAR SHOWED THAT: (1) A HIGHWAY PAVEMENT SIMULATION CAN BE FORMED OF A STEEL PLATE ON AN ELASTIC FOUNDATION USING THE PAVEMENT DEFLECTION CURVE AS A DESIGN CRITERIA, (2) PAVEMENT STRAIN INCREASES RAPIDLY WITH TIRE PRESSURE, (3) PAVEMENT STRAIN INCREASES WITH THE ROUGHNESS OF THE PAVEMENT PROFILE, (4) NO LINEAR RELATIONSHIP EXISTS BETWEEN TIRE FORCE AND PAVEMENT STRAIN, AND (5) TIRE FORCE INCREASES WITH VEHICLE VELOCITY. THE REPORT RECOMMENDED THAT FURTHER STUDIES BE MADE USING THE SIMULATED STEEL PLATE ON ELASTIC FOUNDATION PAVEMENT SIMULATION IN WHICH THE EFFECTS AT HIGHER SPEEDS WOULD BE SOUGHT AND IN WHICH TIRE FORCES WOULD BE MEASURED SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH PAVEMENT REPONSES. /AUTHOR/
