GEOMETRICALLY NONLINEAR SHELL THEORY IN THE LIGHT OF THE METHOD OF ASYMPTOTIC INTEGRATION

The method of asymptotic integration, described in the paper, allows an iteration procedure for the successive determination of a approximate solution of three-demensional equations of geometrically nonlinear theory for the shell continuum. The classification of the shell problems is presented in terms of qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the shell data, and a possibility of estimating the influence of different types of external actions is indicated. On the basis of the results yielded by the asymptotic analysis, general information on the shell behavior may be deduced. A comparison of the predictions with the results of the numerical analysis is given for some plate and shell examples.

UNIVERSAL FORM OF THE BOUNDARY LAYER EQUATION AND ITS SOLUTION FOR NON-NEWTONIAN POWER-LAW FLUIDS

This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the laminar boundary layer flow of a non-Newtonian fluid, obeying the power-law model, past an arbitary two-dimensional surface. The universal form of the boundary layer equation, such that neither the equation nor the boundary conditions depend on the particular conditions of the problem, is derived. This universality is achieved by introducing a set of parameters expressing the influence of external conditions characteristic of a particular problem into a number of independent variables. The universal equation is solved numerically by a parameter approximation. Using this solution several particular problems are analyzed in detail.

NOVEL PRINCIPLE FOR THE COMPUTATION OF STRESS INTENSITY FACTORS

A state of plane strain in a notched or cracked elastic domain under the action of boundary tractions is considered. It is shown that the stress intensity factor K at a root of a notch can be re presented in the form of a weighted average of the tractions, and that the weight functions involved can be derived from the boundary displacements of two special stress fields, each of which is characterized by a "fundamental singularity" at the root and by the absence of externally impressed forces.

LIFTING-LINE THEORY OF SUPERCAVITATING PROPELLERS AT NON-ZERO CAVITATION NUMBERS

Lifting-line theory is developed to estimate the characteristics of a supercavitating propeller at non-zero cavitation numbers. An integral equation is derived for the circulation of the blade element at any radius and its numerical method of solution is proposed. Partial and over characteristics of propeller are obtained and discussed in relation to the cavitation numbers and advance constant. Further, the optimum distribution of circulation is clarified at specified torque and advance constant. The theory is validated by comparisons with experimental data.
