MILLIWATT FUEL CELL SYSTEM FOR SENSORS

The development of a small milliwatt fuel cell system for powering sensors is described. The fuel cell is fueled by hydrogen derived from a solid calcium hydride fuel and oxygen derived from hydrogen peroxide. The fuel cell delivers a steady 100 milliwatts at 6 volts to a DC to DC inverter with an output of about 30 volts. The inverter output charges a small 28 volt nickel-cadmium battery which delivers a steady 2 mA to a sensing load and 430 mA intermittently to a transmitter. /GMRL/

A NOVEL NEGATIVE-LIMITED SEALED NICKEL-CADMIUM CELL

The new cell is designed to be negative-limited on charge and utilizes a negative electrode which incorporates a substrate possessing high hydrogen overvoltage characteristics. The negative-limited feature of the cell precludes the formation of appreciable amounts of oxygen since the positive electrode is never overcharged. The test results shhowed that the negative-limited cell is a viable approach to the development of a long-lived secondary cell. /GMRL/
